I completed my GPT1 term at Darcy Road Surgery, a mixed billing (GPT1 registrars bulk-bill) family-owned practice in Wentworthville.
I thoroughly enjoyed my term and it was a great learning experience.
The patient population is diverse with a good mix of elderly and young patients. It was initially quiet but built up steadily. There is a good opportunity to practice chronic disease management as patients would most often be exclusively your patients. There is a reasonable number of acute cases such as laceration repair, acute asthma, acute abdominal pain, etc.
The schedule is flexible but generally 4 days of 8 - 9 hour shifts and Saturday morning 3-hour shift. This practice currently caters for 3 nursing home patients.
It is an appointment only practice so you get to have good control of your appointment book and can take as little or as much time as needed.
Staff are amazing and are a delight to work with. The practice manager is very accommodating and supportive. The receptionist knows the patients, manages appointments well and handles time-consuming administrative tasks (e.g. chasing records, emailing/faxing). The nurses are a great resource and assist with immunisations, dressing changes, health assessments and more.
Supervision was available at all times with a mix of in person and over the phone. Dr Khoury was always happy to review a patient and does case-based teaching. There is also a skin check GP from whom I learned a lot by doing skin check with a dermatoscope, punch biopsies and even assisted with excision and flap procedures.
Overall, I would highly recommend this practice to registrars of any level.

I had the pleasure of spending the final 12 months of my registrar training at Darcy Road Surgery. It was a wonderful practice to work at with very supportive staff and a wide selection of patients from different demographics. The practice has a strong family-based ethos of providing holistic care for their patients. Most patients are well established at the practice, polite and motivated to work in partnership with the healthcare staff to improve their health. Many have been attending the practice loyally for well over a decade.
The practice was also very accommodating with rostering and flexible in meeting registrar needs. Dr Johnny Khoury provided a wealth of practical experience and knowledge and could always be easily contacted. The other Fellowed GPs and the nursing staff working at the practice are also very supportive, approachable and willing to offer further advice and guidance whenever it was sought. The on-site presence of allied healthcare staff such as podiatrist and clinical psychologist further promoted integration of learning and assisted in making management of patients' healthcare needs more streamlined.
There was also always a mixture of clinical presentations with plenty of scope including residential aged care patients, home visit patients, minor surgical procedures, childhood immunisations and chronic disease. Furthermore, being just a stone's throw away from Westmead and Children's Hospitals, there is also easy access to specialist support and tertiary care.
I would recommend Darcy Road Surgery for any registrar of any level of training as both a valuable placement for developing clinical skills and knowledge as well as personal growth towards becoming an independent practitioner.

Darcy Road Surgery is a great place for a GP registrar to work and train with a good mix of acute and chronic presentations in patients spanning the age spectrum. Dr Khoury is a wonderful teacher who is never too busy to assist, and along with the entire staff, provides a lovely place to work and learn.

Darcy Road Surgery is an excellent registrar teaching experience. Johnny is an amazing supervisor and will give sound advice and make sure you feel well supported whilst you train with him. The practice has a great family feel, where they take time out of their day to catch up with you for a coffee and its clear that they take an interest in their registrars. The patient base is diverse. In addition, the rest of the practice staff are a pleasure to work with. I am very glad I completed a training term with Darcy Road surgery. I would whole-heartedly recommend DRS to trainees looking for a good practice with a good mentor with a great practice culture!

Darcy Road Surgery is an excellent placement option for GP registrars. Education and supervision provided by Dr Khoury is fantastic, particularly in procedural skills such as skin lesion excision, biopsy, joint injections and cryotherapy. I also found the experienced support staff at Darcy Road to be invaluable assets in aiding a junior registrar. Working at Darcy Road as a GPT1 was a wonderful way to start the GP training program and an experience I will not forget.
